Plant-A-Tree History and Honorees

The Plant-A-Tree program was begun by the Forest Council of Turtle Bay to help restore the native forest destroyed in the 1992 Fountain Fire off Highway 299 East.  Today, Turtle Bay and the Western Shasta RCD are partnering to expand the Plant-A-Tree program to restore damaged riparian and forest habitat areas on both public and private lands in Western Shasta County.

This partnership is vital to the health of our community, through the elimination of non-native vegetation along our creeks and streams, and the restoration of the natural watershed and habitat.  Trees are an ideal long-term way to capture and store, or “sequester” carbon from greenhouse gases in the environment, helping to reduce the threat of global warming.  Property that has been restored to its natural state also serves to reduce the threat of catastrophic fire through the elimination of excess bio-fuels.

All trees planted through the Plant-A-Tree program are native to the replanting area. Through the Plant-A-Tree program, Turtle Bay and Western Shasta RCD are currently working to restore forests and oak woodlands throughout the county and natural riparian habitat, particularly along Lower Clear Creek.
