The night sky has fascinated me since I was a young boy. My father was an amateur astronomer who built his own telescopes in the basement, and I remember watching him with awe. One night when I was only seven years old, my father set up a telescope to view Saturn, and I peered through the eyepiece to see the planet. Even though it appeared so tiny, that moment left a lasting impression on me.
Over the years, I continued to stargaze and learn about constellations during family trips. It wasn’t until I moved to Kauai that I purchased my first telescope – a computerized GoTo model with a database of 2,000 objects. I remember being struck by the beauty of the Christmas Tree nebula when I first viewed it through my telescope, and how much it resembled a Christmas Tree even though I could only see the stars within the nebula.
It wasn’t until I moved to Northern California and captured a photo of the moon with my cellphone through the eyepiece of my telescope that I discovered the hobby of astrophotography. It took me a few years to hone my skills and get good at astrophotography, but people began to take notice of my work. Though I responded that I would sell them when they were good enough, it wasn’t until I was asked to display my prints in an art gallery that I realized they were truly exceptional. The high-quality metal printing process adds to their appeal, imbuing them with vibrancy and luminescence.
Most of the images on display were captured between 2021 and 2023, with about half coming from my backyard here in Redding. When I am not imaging from my backyard, I use remote telescopes located in Chile, Australia, and Spain that are owned by Telescope Live. This allows me to maximize the amount of time I have under the darkest, clearest skies on the planet.
For the processing of all these data sets, I use Pixinsight, which is the Photoshop for astrophotographers. Processing these images was a two-year learning experience, and countless hours are necessary to achieve the desired result for each image. It is worth noting that even the same data acquired with different or even the same equipment processed by someone else will produce a different image. As such, all images I produce are uniquely mine.
