Volunteer Spotlight: Lori Sorrick

Meet Lori! An incredible volunteer in our Horticulture Department! Lori has been dedicated to serving Turtle Bay for many years now, so we sat down with her to get her experience on some of the many things she loves about volunteering!

“Turtle Bay Horticulture is a fun place to volunteer!  After moving to Redding in 2016, a Turtle Bay intro session for potential volunteers caught my eye.  I decided Horticulture would be a good fit.  Excellent choice!  I enjoy working outdoors in the nursery with other enthusiastic volunteers and Turtle Bay staff.  There is always something to do!

I have collected plants from the Gardens and propagated more from cuttings. I’ve transplanted seedlings from small pots to larger pots, observing their growth over weeks and months. This happens at our large, newly designed potting table or in the green house. I have propagated & pruned, weeded & watered all sorts of plants from CA natives to drought tolerant salvias to our ever popular veggies.

It is amazing how much happens behind the scenes! Maybe that’s why the spring and fall plant sales are highlights for me.  It is rewarding and fun to see so many people strolling through the Nursery, getting questions answered and selecting plants.  I get to meet families with kids and gardeners of all ages.  It reminds me that gardening is indeed universal! “

Thank you Lori, for all your hard works and dedication to Turtle Bay!
